Beef & Caramelized Onions (Pan-Seared)
Ingredients (serves 3–4)
Beef

700 g (1½ lb) beef sirloin, flank, or chuck steak

2 tbsp vegetable oil or olive oil

1 tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
1 tsp paprika
-
½ tsp ground cumin (optional but recommended)
Onions
-
2 large onions, sliced into rings
-
2 tbsp butter
-
1 tbsp oil
Optional flavor boosters

2 cloves garlic, sliced
-
1 tbsp soy sauce OR Worcestershire sauce
-
½ tsp chili flakes (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the beef

Slice beef against the grain into thin strips or bite-size pieces.

Pat dry with paper towels (important for browning).

Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and cumin.
-
Let rest at room temp for 15 minutes.
2. Caramelize the onions
-
Heat butter + oil in a large pan over medium heat.
-
Add onions and a pinch of salt.
-
Cook slowly for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
-
Onions should be soft, golden, and slightly sweet.
-
Remove onions from pan and set aside.
3. Sear the beef
-
Increase heat to high.
-
Add oil if needed.
-
Add beef in one layer (cook in batches if needed).
-
Don’t stir for 2–3 minutes — let it brown.

Flip and cook another 2 minutes.

Add garlic (if using) and stir briefly.
4. Combine & finish

Return onions to the pan.

Add soy sauce or Worcestershire (optional).

Toss everything together for 1–2 minutes.

Taste and adjust seasoning.
