Beef & Caramelized Onions (Pan-Seared)
Ingredients (serves 3–4)
Beef
700 g (1½ lb) beef sirloin, flank, or chuck steak
2 tbsp vegetable oil or olive oil
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
1 tsp paprika
½ tsp ground cumin (optional but recommended)
Onions
2 large onions, sliced into rings
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp oil
Optional flavor boosters
2 cloves garlic, sliced
1 tbsp soy sauce OR Worcestershire sauce
½ tsp chili flakes (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the beef
Slice beef against the grain into thin strips or bite-size pieces.
Pat dry with paper towels (important for browning).
Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and cumin.
Let rest at room temp for 15 minutes.
2. Caramelize the onions
Heat butter + oil in a large pan over medium heat.
Add onions and a pinch of salt.
Cook slowly for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Onions should be soft, golden, and slightly sweet.
Remove onions from pan and set aside.
3. Sear the beef
Increase heat to high.
Add oil if needed.
Add beef in one layer (cook in batches if needed).
Don’t stir for 2–3 minutes — let it brown.
Flip and cook another 2 minutes.
Add garlic (if using) and stir briefly.
4. Combine & finish
Return onions to the pan.
Add soy sauce or Worcestershire (optional).
Toss everything together for 1–2 minutes.
Taste and adjust seasoning.
