Serves: 4–6
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 6–8 hours (low) or 3–4 hours (high)

Salisbury Steak Patties

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 preferred)

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or panko

  • 1 packet onion soup mix (or see homemade version below)

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp salt (optional—soup mix is salty)

Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms (white or cremini)

  • 1 medium onion, sliced (optional but recommended)

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (adds depth)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

To Thicken (added at the end)

  • 3 tbsp cornstarch

  • 3 tbsp cold water

🔪 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  1. In a large bowl, combine:

    • Ground beef

    • Breadcrumbs

    • Onion soup mix

    • Egg

    • Worcestershire

    • Garlic powder & pepper

  2. Mix gently (don’t overwork or patties get tough).

  3. Form into 4–6 oval patties, about ¾-inch thick.

2️⃣ Optional but Recommended: Brown the Patties

This adds flavor but can be skipped if you’re short on time.

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high with a little oil.

  • Sear patties 1–2 minutes per side until browned (not cooked through).

  • Transfer to slow cooker.

3️⃣ Layer the Slow Cooker

  • Place mushrooms and onions in the bottom of the crockpot.

  • Lay patties on top.

  • Sprinkle extra mushrooms over the patties (like in the image).

4️⃣ Make the Gravy

In a bowl, whisk together:

  • Beef broth

  • Worcestershire sauce

  • Soy sauce

  • Garlic powder

  • Onion powder

  • Paprika

  • Black pepper

Pour evenly over patties.

5️⃣ Slow Cook

  • LOW: 6–8 hours

  • HIGH: 3–4 hours

Patties will be ultra-tender and swimming in gravy.

6️⃣ Thicken the Gravy

  1. Mix cornstarch + cold water.

  2. Stir into slow cooker.

  3. Cover and cook 15–20 minutes on HIGH, until thickened.

🍽️ Serve With

  • Mashed potatoes 🥔 (classic)

  • Egg noodles

  • Rice

  • Buttered green beans or peas

Spoon lots of gravy over everything.

✨ Pro Tips

  • Don’t stack patties too tightly—overlapping is fine.

  • For richer gravy, stir in 2 tbsp sour cream at the end.

  • Ground turkey works, but add 1–2 tbsp olive oil for moisture.

  • Leftovers are even better the next day.

🧅 Homemade Onion Soup Mix (Optional)

If skipping the packet:

  • 3 tbsp dried minced onion

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp sugar

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper
